Everybody that has had to work in a kitchen and had trouble seeing properly due to poor lighting will know that the cabinets are the main problem. However, it is not an option to just remove all the cabinets in a kitchen and therefore under cabinet lighting should be installed. This lighting was specifically designed to be put underneath cabinets and the light to be directed down so that the countertops will be illuminated.
Although lighted cabinets are available to purchase it is an expensive option for the average person to replace the cabinets. On the other hand, if you are remodeling or building your home then it would be a good time to install lighted cabinets.
For those who have cabinets already the best option would be to install under the counter lighting which you should have no problem finding in a home improvement store and sometimes large retail stores will have a small selection.
For the do-it-yourselfer who can't hammer a nail without a throbbing thumb you can purchase lights with the peel off paper that sticks on with adhesive. They can be placed on the bottom of the cabinet and these usually are battery operated. They work by pressing them on but note that they are not quite as bright as the others.
Those with some skills using tools can choose light fixtures that are mounted with screws and have to be plugged into an outlet. This is a good option for those needing extra light for just a small area of the countertop, but it is not suitable for areas that require a lot of additional lighting. Also keep in mind that outlets are necessary and will have to be sacrificed, something that can cause problems in a kitchen with a lot of appliances.
The best lighting for under your cabinets is not for the amateur or do-it-yourselfer. Perhaps if you have some knowledge working with electricity you can but otherwise it would be best to hire a professional to do it. The best choice for under cabinets is hard wired directly in the electrical system and operated using an on off switch.
Although more difficult to install, there are many advantages of hard wired lighting over the other styles. It provides better light than those that run on batteries and you also don't have to worry about the batteries weakening or being replaced. You also won't have to use up outlets and no cords will be visible. Of all the advantages, though, the biggest is probably the fact that a dimmer can be attached to this type of under cabinet lighting. A dimmer is a great thing to have and many use them to keep the lights dim when it is late so that if they get up there is enough light in the kitchen to see, but not enough to completely wake up the person.
No matter what kind of under cabinet lighting you end up choosing, you will always see the difference it makes in your kitchen and you will also soon realize that squinting to see things in a dim light will no longer be necessary.
