The Log Cabin-Optional Rustic Look

by Abbie Osborne-Wilson

What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of cabins? Do cozy, warm, inviting and homely sound familiar? I can't help but associate a cabin with sipping hot chocolate on a cold night or a long nap on a hot day. It is that relaxing a place for me.

Designing your home to be a semblance of a real cabin is easy. The furnishings and materials used are simple and accessible in many flea markets. The style is straightforward and the colors simple yet rich, hence not a bit lacking in the vibrant and cheery qualities. Abundant colors are greens, reds, browns, yellows and blacks.

Cabins are usually situated in the mountains, by the lake, in the ranch or in the forest. Wow, talk about being one with nature. Talk about simplicity and tranquility. Therefore, getting inspiration from the colors you see in nature or in the different seasons is a way to decorate the cabin-style way. I personally love the rich colors of autumn and the lively green shades present in the outdoors.

Furniture pieces are a very important element when you're creating the rustic look. Try to get wooden furniture as much as possible for this project so that you get to stick to the theme. You can highlight your rustic aesthetic by looking for pieces that look unfinished, such as those with odd twigs sticking out or sections of bark still present. Accessories like old snowshoes, hunting relics and an ax or two will really bring out the theme and make it more apparent.

Simpler window designs work best with the rustic theme so that they don't draw attention away from the more important details in the room. Just make sure that the windows have a wood design in them; you can apply treatments to make the material look more like wood. At the same time, leave your windows with as few ornaments as possible - a plain curtain at most. Have the windows admit as much natural light as possible because that helps complete the rustic, outdoorsy feel.

The floor is also made of hardwood. Because genuine wood can be expensive, you can go for any materials that resemble wood. Not to worry because when adorned with some area rugs, even the cheapest hardwood floor will look good. The rugs add to the comforting ambiance of the space, especially if the colors also range from the warm earth tones to the richness of autumn colors.

Don't forget to decorate the floor with area rugs in earth colors. The flooring should ideally be in hardwood, but otherwise, area rugs will still be able to add to the appeal of the place. No need for loud designs or big patterns. A solid color in dark or light tone, depending on the mood you want to have will do. Get a larger rug to accommodate a furniture set like the sofa and dining table sets for a more homely look.

Additionally, you can add to the wall decors by hanging an area rug. This will look nice in the entryway and the living room.

If you found this information about Home Design helpful, then you are bound to adore these brown area rugs.
