The diagnosis of celiac disease is confirmed by a characteristic abnormal small intestine under the microscope. Flattening of the normal fingers like projections called villi accompanied by signs of inflammation is interpreted as a sign of damage or injury from the storage protein wheat gluten and similar proteins in barley and rye. The biopsy of the small intestine has become the gold standard for establishing diagnosis of celiac disease or gluten sensitive enteropathy. Before 1960, the gluten withdrawal followed by improvement and subsequent worsening after a recovery has been the diagnostic criteria.

The bottom line is that a normal biopsy does not definitively celiac disease or sensitivity to gluten.
Celiac biopsy diasease: What are other possible causes of biopsy changes that mimic celiac disease?
Protein Cowa's milk sensitive enteropathy (CMSE), viral or bacterial infections, medications (especially aspirin as arthritis drugs eg ibuprofen, etc.), the autoimmune enteropathy, infection by Helicobacter pylori (the bacteria, stomach ulcers), AIDS, common variable immunodeficiency, and lymphoma of the intestine are many possible causes of changes that mimic small intestinal celiac May. However, If you have any classic symptoms of celiac type, a specific positive celiac antibodies (anti-endomysial or tissue transglutaminase antibodies) and response positively to a gluten-free diet celiac then is the likely cause.
