Lots of very old buildings don't always have the rainwater systems we are used to seeing as standard on most new homes and other types properties. Of course, during the renovation of a very old house new gutters are usually installed by the builders but fitting rainwater gutters on old buildings can often be a very tricky and expensive process depending on the type of rainwater system chosen.
The most common and cost effective gutters and downpipes are made in either cast iron or aluminium. These are relatively easy to install because these are available in so many different sizes and shapes so usually fit every requirement. The first thing do in installing a guttering system is to measure the slope length of the eaves. After measuring the slope and length, you can be sure of the sizes you need. Then, choose the material of the guttering like aluminium gutters or cast iron gutters. Both are very popular material in the building industry.
Aluminium gutters are definitely the most popular choice because they are slightly cheaper so more cost effective than cast iron gutters. After buying your aluminium gutter, measure it yet again and cut it down to fit the eaves of your house or property. Then, attach the gutter parts to brackets that are placed to the eaves to provide stability. Once the gutter itself is installed, then place the downspout in the correct position.
Rainwater systems don't come with a pre-prepared hole for a downspout, so you will need to sort this out after you've bought the guttering. Do a test fit of the downspout before you actually fit the whole thing together and once you are satisfied that everything fits together as it should than secure the whole lot together with the brackets and screws.
Once the downpipe has been installed and the whole system is fitting well together it is also recommended that you install leaf guards to prevent clogging of your brand new rain gutter with leaves and litter.
