Given this is not a topic brought up around the poker table why don't we take on this bothersome problem and pain source for guys. Prostatitis. Difficult to spell and for some even harder to cure. But even though an enlarged prostate is something many guys will face, the stats say more will get this than BPH.

To help shed some light on what if we look at some frequently asked questions about prostatitis?

QUESTION: Can you give me some symptoms to watch for?

ANSWER: Sure. Think enough pain to make you eager to see the doctor. Pain when urinating, with getting up to go often at night, and more than just discomfort in your genital region.

QUESTION: Isn't this more something my Dad may have to deal with?

ANSWER: Typically but not exclusively. Younger guys can get it too.

QUESTION: C'mon, what's the big deal? How many guys end up with this prostatitis or whatever anyway?

ANSWER: More than you would think. Like maybe a bit less than half deal with this sometime in their life. Given that, don't be surprised if you experience it first hand. Even if you'd rather not.

QUESTION: A friend mentioned this is a warning sign of prostate cancer. Is it?

ANSWER: Nope. No truth to that.

QUESTION: What's the causes of this?

ANSWER: Sometimes it's a bacterial infection which is why the common treatment is to do antibiotics. Other times what causes it isn't known. Some say diet can trigger it. Others label the causes as a mystery of medical science.

QUESTION: What cures it again?

ANSWER: For some antibiotics like Cipro do the trick. Others say this clears up after drinking lots of cranberry juice. Others swear by dried cranberries. Some just change their diet and cut out some stuff. One might find that popping quercetin, which is more of a herbal remedy than medicine, really works. It brings relief because of the anti-inflammatory properties is has.

QUESTION: Taking a pill sounds easy.

ANSWER: I know it sounds easy and all. Drugs - what's not to like? But you must be flawless when dealing with this problem. Your prostate's plumbing isn't geared to make fighting bacteria easy. So diligence counts when it comes to the antibiotics. You must take them each day for as long as you're told to. In some cases for like four to six weeks? As length of treatments go, it's not short.

QUESTION: So prostatitis isn't a problem for women then?

ANSWER: You are right. It's not.

In any case, if you've had a sudden jump in the number of times you've heading for the bathroom and are more than a little bothered by pelvic pain maybe you should see your urologist. As, like may others, you too might have prostatitis.
