Pond Aerators Decrease Algae Growth

by Kathy Hughes

Pond aerators are a critical component of preserving a clean and healthy pond. Aerators create water circulation and oxygenation. The benefits of aerating a pond are numerous. It increases the speed of waste decomposition, reduces the growth of algae, provides cleaner water, transfers gas and oxygen, and it stimulates bacteria that is beneficial to a pond.

Pond aerators are required for a pond suffering from a severe decrease in oxygen levels. This is often caused by agricultural run-off, sewage discharges, and other human activities. Aerators either infuse oxygen into the bottom or through the surface, with the use of spray devices and fountains. It enables oxygen to re-enter the water while releases noxious gasses, including methane and carbon dioxide.

Pumps compress oxygen to the floor of a pond. A combination of air bubbles and friction elevate water from the floor of a pond to its surface. Water becomes exposed to the oxygenated atmosphere, increasing oxygen intake while decreasing noxious gasses.

A second popular form of surface ventilation is paddlewheels. Paddlewheels stir up water, enabling direct contact with oxygen molecules. When water is mixed back into a pond, it has the attached oxygen to it and therefore the water is blended.

Subsurface ventilation systems generate bubbles that administer an oxygen transfer through water. There are two types of systems, each generating a different kind of bubble, either fine or coarse. Most preferred among pond owners are fine bubbles. More fine bubbles can be created in a certain amount of time than coarse bubbles and they have a larger amount of surface area. Fine bubbles can transfer oxygen more effectively than coarse bubbles. Coarse bubbles are only created a few at a time and take more time to oxygenate water.

Another type of surface ventilation is paddlewheels. This device churns water, also allowing for direct contact with oxygen. Therefore, when water is churned back into the pond, it brings with it oxygen to mix with the water.

Pond aerators are needed to keep the ecosystem of a pond running smoothly, as well as keep the fish healthy, and water free of mosquitoes. By keeping a good level of oxygen in water, it increases the water quality. These systems also push out harmful gasses that are not beneficial to the maintenance of the pond.
