Please… Stop Snoring!

by Martin Roman

Is it possible to stop snoring? Before you can determine the answer to that question, you must first uncover the cause of your snoring. Snoring happens when there is an obstruction in your airway. This obstruction can be in your nasal passages or in the back of your throat in an area called the pharynx.

The obstruction is what causes that deep, vibrating snore. It can be caused by a pharynx that is too narrow, by nasal congestion, age, obesity, or several other reasons. Therefore, in order to figure out how to stop snoring, you must identify the cause.

Medical research has shown that a significant percentage of the world's population grapples with snoring. The effects may be direct (you are the person struggling with the condition), or indirect (you are a partner, roommate, parent or sibling of the one who snores). Little wonder then as to why there is a growing demand for solutions that have been proven effective if one wants to stop snoring.

Snoring disrupts your sleep and can be bad for your health. Snoring disrupts the sleep of anyone who can hear you. This can create a real strain on a marriage. Snoring can drive spouses into separate bedrooms for sleeping. Many people would be grateful for a snoring cure.

Many remedies can be tried in the quest to stop snoring. They range from free or inexpensive all the way to expensive surgery. An expensive snoring cure does not necessarily mean it will be effective and just because a remedy is free it doesn't mean it is a waste of your time.

To stop snoring, you are probably going to have to make some lifestyle changes. For one thing, you should reduce the amount of alcohol you drink, particularly in the hours right before bedtime. Also, if you are overweight, the first thing you must do is to lose some weight. You don't necessarily have to get down to your ideal weight. Losing just some weight may help you a lot. That's because when you are overweight, you have excess fat tissue surrounding your airways and this can cause an obstruction when you fall asleep. To help you lose weight and cure snoring, you should eat a healthy diet and take up regular exercise. If you smoke, you should stop. Smoking has been linked to snoring problems.

The proper sleeping position can be an effective sleeping cure. You should try sleeping with the head of your bed elevated. You can do this by purchasing an adjustable bed, raising the head of your bed up on blocks, or putting a wedge under your mattress. When you sleep with your head elevated, it relieves pressure against your throat and chest which improves the air flow into and out of your lungs and may even help you stop snoring for good.

If none of the about natural stop snoring remedies work, you should talk to your doctor. He will be able to advise you about over-the-counter or prescription medication that might be able to help you stop snoring. If medication does not help, your doctor may want you to undergo surgery as a permanent snoring cure.
