So what is a herniated disc you may ask? Okay, back to a little hard on anatomy, specifically lumbar discs, because they are easier to understand.
There are basically 2 parts to a lumbar disc. There are jelly-like center part called the nucleus, and then there is the hard outer portion called the annulus. The discs in the lumbar region or lower back surfaces are described in text books as a shock. They take the body weight, because they are situated between vertebral bodies, contributing to the height of the vertebral column and are very important to the overall movement of the spine.
Because our way of life involves a lot of sitting and bending, it means the posterior or back of the ring can develop small cracks or tears in it. This creates an opening for the kernel jelly-like to pass. Depending on the length of the crack in the annulus, the nucleus can move a little or a lot.
Now, the outer 1 / 3 of a lumbar disc has a nerve supply which means that if the crack in the ring extends into this section, it can become painful. If the core moves down into the crack it can cause more pain then ...
So how can you relieve stress and pressure on the back of the ring and stopping cracks first? Well, basically, it's all about posture. The lower back has a natural curve or hollow. It is very important to sit high and place a rolled towel or McKenzie lumbar roll in the hollow of the kidneys. You must place the roller primarily on your belt or waist level. If you can use a roll for most of the time it will take the stress and pressures on the back of the disc and prevent a tear or disc herniation developing the first place.
