Who:
Jews around the world celebrate Purim every year. It celebrates their survival from a plan to kill all the Jews of ancient Persia. Of course, there was some divine intervention along the path.
The main characters in the story of Purim are:
King Ahasuerus who reigned 2300 years ago Persia.
His first wife Vashti, who did not last very long.
Haman, the King's Chief Adviser who hated the Jewish people.
Mordechai - A holy man and leader of the Jewish people at that time.
Esther - cousin Mordechai and the Jewish woman who captured the heart of the king and risked his life to save his people.
What:
Purim celebrates events which are recounted in the book of Esther. The book of Esther was the last book to be canonised in Tanach. The Tanach includes the first five books of the Torah, the book "prophets" (including Joshua, Samuel, Kings, etc.) and "Writings" (including employment, Proverbs Ruth and more).
In the story, King Ahasuerus of Persia is married to Vashti, whom he "divorces" (using the old method of killing his wife) after the public refuses to come to him during a game. The leader of the Jewish community, Mordechai, was a cousin named Esther. Esther is chosen to be the new king's wife, but nobody knows she is actually Jewish. Chief Counsel Ahasuerus of Haman hated the Jews, especially after Mordecai refuses to bow before him.
Haman has created a plan of genocide and has obtained permission from the king to kill all Jews in the Kingdom. Mordechai knowledge of the project and asked Esther to save the Jewish people by the king's approach and reveal its true identity as a woman Jewish. At first Esther was reluctant, because the approach of the king without being summoned is punishable by death. However Mordechai persuaded to intervene to save his people. At the request of Esther, the entire Jewish community prays, fasts, as she prepares to approach the king.
Esther invites both Ahasuerus and Haman to a meal and this meal Esther reveals her identity and begs the king to save his and his people. The king became furious and Haman was hung on the gallows he had intended to use to kill Mordechai. Since Ahasuerus's edict decreeing the murder of Jews can not be canceled, he issues an edict allowing the Jews to take up arms and kill their enemies, they do. Subsequently, the day after the battle has been designated as Purim, a day of celebration and rejoicing. After their victory, he also said that the Jews of ancient Persia have reaffirmed their desire to improve their Torah study and observance of Jewish law.
When:
The events of the Purim story took place there about 2300 years.
Purim is celebrated annually on 14 of the Hebrew month of Adar. (In cities surrounded by a wall, like Jerusalem, it is celebrated on Adar 15.) As with all Jewish holidays, Purim begins at sundown the previous day. For example, this year (2007), Purim is celebrated on the evening of March 3rd and the day of March 4, until sunset.
Where:
The story of Purim took place in ancient Persia, the reign of King Ahasuerus. Jewish people celebrate Purim in their homes, synagogues and communities each year. They go to synagogue to hear the Megillah (the story of Purim in the original Hebrew, written on a scroll) once in the evening and once during the day. They also eat a festive meal celebrating the day, usually at home. Sometimes, synagogues and Jewish organizations like Chabad will offer a meal of Purim for the entire community.
Why:
The Jewish people celebrate Purim for several reasons:
1) A Story of Survival - Persia under the reign of King Ahasuerus was large enough. Haman had succeeded in his plot to kill all Jews in the kingdom, the Jewish people would have been almost completely exterminated.
2) divine intervention in natural events - The miracle of Purim is that the events when they occur, does not seem like a miracle at all. Only in retrospect, viewing the events of history as a whole, we can see how God's hand spun together a series of seemingly unrelated events to save the Jewish people from extermination.
3) Eternal optimism - that Rabbi Shraga Simmons Aish.com wrote: "The story of Esther teaches us that life challenges work for best, because what appears as obstacles are really opportunities for us to develop the best. And everything comes from the invisible hand of God guiding our fate at each step of the road. "
4) It's fun! - Purim is one of the most joyous holidays of the year. It is a holiday, both joking and jesting at the synagogue and at home!
