King Heated
Dover Castle is undergoing a metamorphosis for the summer of 2009. Well, at least the Great Tower is! As of August 2009 King Henry II medieval royal court comes to life in the imposing central keep of Dover Castle.
Using a combination of film technology, characters in costume and a faithful recreation of the royal court will Dover Castle transported back to the twelfth century - a turbulent era of the history of England, where visitors will be able to the king himself as he wanders the corridors.
A Frenchman, Henry ascended the throne of England in 1154, when he succeeded Stephen King, niece of his mother Matilda, daughter of Henry I. When the throne of England was in a state of turmoil and Henry decided to assert order. Thomas Becket as his chancellor appointment the couple began to England failing to reform the judicial establishment of courts and prisons, and thus maintain control over the royal assizes.
It was an exciting time in the development of the royals and included Henry's attempt to control the church in 1164 which led to a heated conflict with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the King's former chancellor Thomas Becket. Unfortunately for the last ended in his early death when he was assassinated by four knights of the king in Canterbury Cathedral in December 1170.
However, in addition to development of a narrated the above events, the sounds, images and even smells of the century that will be portrayed accurately in the Great Tower. Indeed, so well is the publicity surrounding this event that Dover hotels hoping their entries will rocket once the opening date for such a fascinating portrait of 12th century royal Shenanigans is finally revealed.
Of course, as the gateway to Europe Dover is also benefiting the thousands of ferry passengers through the port every day. Perhaps some will be tempted to stay in port for a visit to Dover Castle to add to their route before or after completion of their cross-Channel trip to France.
Certainly the children are guaranteed fun as the plans for the Great Tower also by a sufficiently accurate picture of the actor costumed court jester of the king known as Roland the Farter! In addition, the King's feuding sons in attendance, including Prince John, who will no doubt provide the adults with a sinister representation of the greedy king candidate. It sounds intriguing and fun!
