Is Golf a Good Way to Get in Shape?

Almost everyone understands that you should exercise to keep in good physical health, nonetheless many people simply have no wish to exercise. Often you will hear the excuses are that they have no time to exercise or it is too much hassle trying to find something that is interesting, and not boring. On the other hand, there are many people that are mindful of the growing problem with an overweight and obese population and they want to do some exercises.

Most people do not like the idea of just doing exercise for the sake of keeping fit. So they look for ideas about a sport to begin to keep in shape, but if you are middle aged or a senior, you can't be considering taking up triathlons or football. Golf, on the other hand, is a sport that is suitable for those both male or female, and young or old.

Playing Golf as a Sport to Keep Healthy

As a sport, golf is relatively easy to get into in the sense that you don't have to train for weeks to participate - as in a triathlon. Once you get started with golf, you will find out that it is greatly entertaining and fun. This is the missing key to actually going out and doing some exercise, because if you enjoy what you are doing, you will be astonished at how often you look for excuses to play. For these reasons, golf has become a sport that provides those many formerly inactive people with a good excuse to go out and begin to exercise.

At the Start

From the outset it is best to start playing shorter rounds of golf, like 9-hole courses, until you can improve your overall physical abilities to allow you to be able to handle the physical requirements for a full golf course. As we are talking about golf as a sport, we have to reject using golf carts because this takes away the benefits of golf to get fit. This makes it necessary to have the physical strength to actually walk the entire golf course before you can think about playing a round of golf. It may turn out that for your first few games you can only manage a handful of the holes. This may seem dispiriting but by constantly playing, you will manage to increase your stamina and strength to permit you to walk and golf all of the holes.

Increasing Your Fitness Level

On the whole, golf is quite a good sport for permitting you to slowly break into an exercise routine. When you first start golf you will be taking golf lessons which will let you to start off gradually by working on your golfswing. You will start to develop your golf muscles and your flexibility at the same time you develop your golf swing.

Even if some folks tell you that you can play golf when you are overweight and unfit, this is not true. Yes, you could ride around in a golf cart and get out to take a stiff looking swing to move the ball a little distance along the fairway, but this is not what golf is about. After you are able to shoot a few pars and birdies, you will want to work on your fitness and flexibility so that you can get improve even more.

If you enjoy playing golf then you will not mind getting up early to go to the golf course. If you really want to take your game to a higher level, you will not mind the little bit of effort to do some exercising to work on your golf muscles and a flexibility program to develop your agility. Once you are passionate about golf you will discover that because you want to improve your golf swing you will also be working on getting into shape for golf and keeping fit.
