Moving is a stressful and sometimes complicated process that leaves most of us feeling a little overwhelmed. In fact, when you are focusing on packing and hiring a moving company, it can be hard to remember all that you need to do. Here are a few things that people often forget to do when moving.
Dry cleaning is one of the items that is often left behind in a move. People simply forget to pick up their clean items, and it might be weeks before you remember. Items that you left at a repair shop also are often left behind, so take a minute to think about what you left behind.
Overdue fees add up, so be sure to find costly items such as DVD rentals and library books. This is especially important if you are moving out of the area, but if you can't find a library book or video, you will accrue late fees every day and might eventually have to pay for the items, as well as the fines. Also, while you are packing, be sure to set aside anything you might have borrowed from friends, family or neighbors and return these items, too.
Make sure you change your address at the post office. The post office will forward mail for many months, and this will give you time to make sure that you permanently change your address for any bill collectors, as well as any friends or correspondents you might have neglected to tell about your move.
Organize all of your vital documents, such as insurance information, car titles, passports and social security cards and place them in a separate box that you move yourself. You also can put in all of the paperwork regarding your move in this box and keep it easily at hand. Be sure, if you are moving far away, to contact all of your health care providers and get copies of all of your records. Place these in the box, too, and you will have no trouble finding it at the new house.
Surprisingly, many people actually forget to leave all of their keys and garage remotes behind when they move. Be sure to check your car for all of your remotes and get keys back from neighbors and family. The new owners probably will change the locks, but at least they will have access those first few days.
One thing many people forget to do is to charge all of their cell phones. This very well be the only way to communicate with your moving company on the big day, so be sure that you have it nearby and fully charged. Be sure to pack your chargers in a convenient spot, either in your car or maybe in your box of important documents.
