Choosing the Best Cat Litter Mat

A good cat litter mat is one that your cat will walk over when leaving the litter box. If he does not then you might have wasted your money.. it only works if he uses it.

Your cat loves to dig and dig until the every last bit of his litter is almost on the outside of the box. Just where is he heading anyway?

What ends up happening is mounds of litter scattered all over your floor or carpet and tracked throughout the house especially if you use clay and similar sand-like grainy litters.

Since you like to try and keep the house clean and tidy you get out the old mop, broom or vacuum to clean up his scattered litter, only to find he has dug out some more litter after a few hours.

Cats just have the natural need to dig and some way more than others.

The best way to keep your house from becoming beachfront property is to buy kitty a litter mat. A good one that he will not have problems using.

Their are plenty of fancy mats out there. What you need to concern yourself with is texture. Their are mainly 2 types. Textured (projections or bumps) and non-textured (soft).

The non textured is like a regular rug that you might even walk on barefooted. You need to be wary of the type with texture on it.

Some cats, (maybe even yours) may not like the feeling of the texture on his paws.

If it feels funny to you then guess what? Your picky cat will have none of that!

Your cat's paw pads (like your feet) are sensitive too. If he does not like it, he may even try to set an Olympic long distance jumping record just to bypass the darn thing. This will get even more litter around the house.

Ah...the joys of owning a little fur kid...

This is not your dream scenario now is it? Not to worry, because your cat may just have no problem at all using a textured variety.

However, if you discover that you still have litter spread all over your house then check your litter mat. It may just be the type he does not like.

Give one of the softer mats a try (non textured). If you can imagine walking over it barefoot then chances are your cat will use it as well.
