Charter Club
Barnsley is a town in the county of South Yorkshire in England on the River Dearne, near Leeds. The economy once centered around extraction coal and glass-making and there is still a coke plant and the glass which still stand, but for the most part, these industries have gone bankrupt during the twentieth century. Barnsley South Yorkshire currently has a population of about 74,000 and is the largest city in the region.
Barnsley began in 1086 with a population of 200 and was called Berneslai. Around 1150 the monetary policy of St. John, Pontefract gave the land the city was planned to create a new city where three roads cut. On this site they built a chapel in St. Mary and has also built a market and in 1249 a charter was granted for enable them to hold weekly markets on Wednesday and four days of exhibition at the time of Saint-Michel.
The location where the monks St. John ¢ 's picked was good and by the seventeenth century Barnsley became a resting point between Leeds and London. There was a lot of traffic in the region and the industry provided. It became a center of weaving flax in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Coal mines were dug and coal and processed glass factories began to appear in the city. The last coal mine closed in 1994, but there are two manufacturing plants glass there.
Wentworth Castle Gardens are very beautiful and has 40 acres of meandering around to see the plant collections of national camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons. The Jubilee Museum Cawthorne is a volunteer-run museum has memorabilia Victorian.
Cannons Hall and Gardens was built in 1710 built by the Spencer family who was in the iron industry in the city. The garden of 70 acres has been developed in 1761. The museum holds paintings, glass and ceramics, a museum of the regiment, and the arts of the nineteenth century and crafts. Most rooms have been refurbished with period furniture. Tour the gardens, and especially find the charming walled garden on the ground.
There are visits also available at Wortley Hall and Gardens and the forging of the 16th century called Wortley Forge. You can view the history of Barnsley on ¢ Barnsleyà 's Peoples Museum at Town Hall once construction is completed in 2012.
Barnsley loves bands and there are several in town that were originally people club social mining community gathered to listen to music. Grimethorpe Colliery Band based near Barnsley is one of the most known brands in the UK being in the film Brassed Off. You can usually find a concert being played somewhere around the city and especially during the holidays.
Barnsley has a stadium that is over 100 years of age called at Oakwell Stadium. They have a football club which plays in the English League. Barnsley Lundwood is a speed race track near the city. The city also has a rugby league which has its home at the Shaw Lane Sports Facility.
Barnsley Market is still held every Wednesday and is a pleasant day. There are many different pubs and restaurants in town that serve great food, and if you need a place to stay, you can find a hotel or bed and breakfast that will meet all your needs.
