The fungus Candida is present in the parts of the body that are moist and warm. These can be the genitals area of men and women and believe it or not, even in the mouth. Thus, overgrowth of Candida causing yeast infection can also happen in the mouth. Yeast infection in the mouth is also called thrush and this usually occurs in babies, toddlers, older adults, and people with weaken immune system.
The overgrowth of fungus in the mouth leads to the development of thrush. The increase abundance of thrush in the mouth can be due to illness, stress, or medications like antibiotics, corticosteroids, and even birth control pills. These medications can kill good bacteria that prevent the overgrowth of Candida, which causes yeast infection.
Symptoms of thrush usually include the presence of a creamy white substance and tly raised lesions in your mouth. These lesions can be found on the tongue or inner cheeks or even on the roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils, or even the back of the throat.
The lesions are also characterized with a cottage cheese appearance and these are painful. They can even bleed slightly when scraped or when you brush your teeth. And if the lesion is severe, this can spread into the esophagus causing pain or difficulty swallowing, a feeling that food is stuck in the throat or mid-chest area, and fever.
Lesions from severe cases of thrush can be dangerous. This is because these can spread to other parts of the body like the liver, lungs, and skin. People with weaken immune system or with illnesses like cancer and HIV, are usually more prone to severe cases of thrush.
If you see symptoms of thrush in your mouth, you have to consult the doctor immediately. Your doctor will look for the distinctive white lesions on your mouth, tongue or cheeks. They will also perform a microscopic examination of the tissue from a lesion to confirm the diagnosis. But if the thrush has already spread to the esophagus, your doctor would have to perform other test like throat culture or endoscopy of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.
Thrush can be cured naturally using plain yoghurt. You can just hold the yoghurt in the mouth for 30 to 60 seconds with each bite. But this will only work with yoghurt that has active culture of probiotics. Thus, when buying yoghurt for thrush, always look for the active culture label. Be warned though that this type of yoghurt is sour so if you don't like eating sour food, you can just add in a banana and a little honey then mixed this with a cup or two of yoghurt. You can also add ice if you want to.
But for severe cases of thrush, antifungal medications are recommended. This is usually taken for 10 to-- days. These medications can be in the form of tablets, lozenges, or liquids depending on your doctor's recommendation. Your doctor might also recommend that you consult a specialist as the presence of candida might also be a symptom of other medical problems that needs to be treated.
