Aerobed Kids
In a recent show, an RSVP has been requested for guests who planned to attend. Not many guests bothered to confirm your presence, but many customers are presented. This has caused some problems in advance and during the show.
Previously, since so few people had RSVPed, there were some potentially bitter moments between galleryowner and the artist in question.
Both the gallery owner and artist harbored thoughts that the other has not done such a good job of mailing invitations or pumping the advertising for the show. It is a problem since the gallery / artist relationship is based on trust to a large extent.
RSVP can also be used as an arms race. From the perspective of the owner of the gallery - the artist's last exhibition was a lot of RSVP and the current program has very little. Words, the artist course is: has no customers coming is based solely on the attractiveness of the gallery or artist ranks so low in spirit customers that, if nothing better to do, he will go to his show. All not real comforting to see a gallery.
The artist has similar concerns. The gallery has no customers coming, they rely solely on the mailing list of the artist or the gallery a very low priority for the client. The problem is that neither the owner of the gallery nor the artist can or should address this issue because of its volatility. Not a great way to generate soft fuzzy relationship between a gallery owner and artist.
During the show has been another problem. RSVP give the owner of the gallery a feel for the logistics involved. Such that the group should be outside, because a crush of people expected? How many wines and cheeses to order? Should there be participating police to direct traffic? Does the owner of the gallery need sales or additional funding / help wrap?
So what? Be nice, RSVP. Yes, it does strive to be somewhere, but what better way to spend a night - see great art by an artist you like, break the mold of staying home or going to the movies (do different things than normal) meet new people and renew old friendships, and perhaps buy some art. Not a bad way to spend an evening.
Your RSVP is a short article with important ramifications. Just think, because of your kindness, you have indirectly contributed to a stronger relationship (a gallery owner and artist). This leads to less tension between the owner of the gallery and the artist ergo an evening better for the customer. Such a small gift with great benefits.
