A baby monitor is a necessity. It enables you to do other things while that baby sleep in the crib. One monitor will be in the nursery and its pair will be with you. You'll be able to hear the movements and sounds of your baby through the monitor.
You should place the baby monitor within 10 feet of the baby. This is why you should have the monitor on a nightstand near the crib, but yet you don't need to have them so close that when the baby gets older, he/she can reach out and touch it. You can either carry the receiver with you or put it by your bed. All models have power switches and enable volume adjustment. You can also use batteries when bringing the receiver with you.
Some baby monitors have a light display that will flash when the baby is crying. You don't need to have the volume turned up if you use this feature, but it does mean that you have to keep looking at the monitor. Baby monitors can also have cameras which you can hook up to your VCR. This lets you watch the baby without actually being in the same room.
Baby monitors also have their cons, though. It can pick up conversations from a cordless phone. Conversations held in the same room as the baby will also be picked up by the baby monitor. In once case we had neighbours with the same monitor on the same frequency and we could hear their entire night-time routine if our monitor was on. You also have to make sure that you keep the monitors away from bathtubs and pools because they are electrical devices.
All in all, a baby monitor is very useful and convenient. You can do other things while your baby sleeps. Never forget that a monitor can NEVER replace proper parental care. Never leave your baby unattended for long periods (even while sleeping check on them from time to time).
