A Guide to Cheap Double Glazing

The windows in your home are one of the main sources for loss of heat in the winter and cool air in the summer. Double glazing, the process of fitting two glass panes into one frame and filling the space between with gas, can help increase the energy efficiency of your windows and save you money. Unfortunately, these windows can be a costly investment. It does not have to be that way, though. There are some parts of a window that are less important than others, making the right kind of cheap double glazing very cost effective.

An unnecessary expense is the gas that is pumped between the glass panes. This can be one of four different types. There is argon, xenon, krypton, and air. Obviously, regular air (the kind we all breathe) is the cheapest of these options. While the other gasses will increase the effectiveness of a window, they are not necessary to get a good result. The largest benefit really comes from the existence of the space between the panes.

The material that the actual frame is constructed from contributes to the reduced price of cheap double glazing. Uncoated polyvinyl chloride (UPVC) is commonly used. This material is just as energy efficient as aluminum but costs less. The only drawback being the outside appearance, which can be at odds with the style of some houses.

You can not see the spacer that is inside the window, but it is there and it can save you money. The spacer is a piece that holds the two glass panes apart inside the frame. This spacer also helps in developing the air-tight seal required for the window. If you are looking for cheap double glazing, look for windows that have spacers made from aluminum, not steel.

The glass in a window can also be coated with one of several different types of metals or films. The windows can be treated to filter out UV rays, retain more heat or reflect more sun to keep it cooler inside. In searching for cheap double glazing, avoid these types of coatings. They will increase the price of the windows, sometimes dramatically.

A sometimes forgotten cost not always calculated into the price of cheap double glazing is the installation fee. If you are lucky, this could be free, but not usually. Installing the windows yourself is no small task, but the savings mount up quickly. With the right tools and some research, it can be an easy job.

If you have looked through all of the available options and can not find any cheap double glazing that suits your home or budget, you may want to investigate secondary glazing. This is a process where a second pane of glass is fitted into your existing window frames. This version of cheap double glazing is popular in older homes. Though not as effective as buying new windows, this will still reduce your heating and cooling bills.

Do not forget that there are some nice side effects that result from how double glazing, even cheap double glazing, works. For one, the pocket of air between the glass panes actually absorbs some of the vibrations from the outside. This means less noise coming through the closed window. Double glazing is also harder to break through, deterring criminals. This is all in addition to the already well known improvements in energy efficiency for the home.
